It’s like walking through a Maze

Don’t you just hate it when your local supermarket decides to rearrange all the aisles?

I don’t know if you’re like me, but when I go shopping for groceries (something I hate doing), I like to get in and get out as fast as possible. Today after work, I needed to stop off at the local IGA for 3 simple items – bread, milk and coffee. Since I’ve shopped here a number of times I know where everything is – at least I did until today. It seems that they decided to completely rearrange every aisle in the store so that it took me forever to find what I was looking for.

Believe it or not, they do this on purpose. A friend of mine that works in the industry told me that supermarkets do this because of people like me who get used to the place. It seems they want you to be going up and down every aisle searching because in this way you’ll end up buying things you wouldn’t normally buy. Well, it didn’t work this time! I stuck to my original plan and walked out of there with only the 3 items I had gone for. The only thing is, it took me 15 minutes or so more than I would have spent if some idiot hadn’t decided to rearrange everything.

that’s the way I see it!

My local grocery store remodeled and re-arranged the entire store layout about 5 months ago. Several times I got so frustrated that I just didn’t purchase the items I went in for, I just did without until I went to another location where I knew where everything was. We have 2 of the same grocery stores equa-distant from my house, so until they were completely done re-arranging my preferred store, I stopped shopping there. They even had gone so far as to add entire aisles by the milk section, temporarily while the laid out the new floor plan. Nuh ah.

Take THAT, stupid store! Mine just moved some aisles, but they did it to push products that didn’t get much attention before (flowers and gifts). Still, it drives me nuts when they move things around. Don’t they know we shop on autopilot?

Actually I think what burns me more is when you go to another store that is the essentially the same like Bi-Lo and that store is in a completely separating arrangement than what you are used to shopping at and wonder if they are all the same company why they don’t all have the same aisle layouts.

My wife and I used to draw up our shopping list based upon where things were in the store. After the third time they rearranged the store, we stopped doing that. Shame on them.

I’m so glad Bill does the shopping so he can be the one to get frustrated. He’s like you he prefers the stores that he knows where everything is and he hates change or at least that type of change.

A similar thing happened to me except we were going for a full blown shopping trip. Our trip wasn’t as frustrating because we ended up going through every aisle anyway. It does drive me insane, though!

Yeah…they did that with my local IGA too. I didn’t like it. Yesterday I was looking for some jalapenos…They were on the opposite end of the grocery area. Why can’t they just leave things be?

    I hate grocery shopping too.

Lucky for me I’m riding in one of those electric carts, so I’m not walking all over the freaking super store trying to find the ketchup.

    It drives me insane! Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

generally speaking, the important healthy food is around the perimeter: milk/eggs, produce, meat/deli and bakery.
all the processed stuff is in the aisles.

its more or less an industry standard

My local HEB did this to me (yes, it was personal, I know it and don’t care what sane people say) several months back. I haven’t been back. If I have to navigate anew, might as well do it in a store that hasn’t screwed you over by taking away your inalienable right to know where you’re going!

I hate when they do that. You go to isle 4 looking for bread and find yourself in the ‘ladies care’ isle instead

OH! I HATE when that happens…I have enough frustration in my day to deal with that. I’m like Jude’s hubby, Bill, I’ll walk out and go to another store. However, at some point, I will have to go back and wander around aimlessly to find what I want…it’s my favorite store! BUT, I ALWAYS stick to my list…unless hubby calls on my cell phone and requests something (this is a common practice of his). LOL

Oh yeah, you’re not alone. My neighbourhood grocery store rearranged its shelves’ contents oh my probably over a year ago, and i *still* looks for things in the wrong aisle. Grrrrr!

On the other hand, it’s strangely comforting to enter a Target, and know immediately where to go , because the layout is usually pretty much the same no matter where. Of course, it’s also chillingly cookie cutter. :p

I’m like you, a creature of habit, and get miffed when the grocery switches things up. I noted this recently: while purchasing salad dressing, the store put all the more expensive bottles at eye level and moved the least expensive ones (the ones I buy) to the bottom shelf. Why? Because most people would rather buy what they can reach rather than squat down for the cheaper stuff. Not me.

Perhaps unlike me you do not have “corner” stores near where you live. I always shop at my local coner store if I need just one or two staple items, milk, bread, tea etc. That way, even through I pay a higher price for the items I save money as I am not tempted by the offers in the supermarket designed to part you from your hard earned cash - and the corner shop never changes its layout.

So true! All the targets around me have done the same thing and, even though it’s been at least a year or more, I still can’t find anything! They might do it for the reasons you stated, but honestly I have spent LESS there then I used to b/c if I can’t find it quickly, I give up and go someplace else.

I actually have a phobia about grocery stores. I really start to have an anxiety attack if I can’t find what I’m looking for and usually I will just leave. I need everything in it’s place for me to feel comfortable. That’s why I like to shop small stores.
