Hysterical & Hilarious - It’s Hysterious!

HYSTERIOUS

One of the favourite things I enjoy doing is visiting my friends Dave & Eileen which I do most every Friday after suffering through another work week. We end up sitting at the kitchen table for hours drinking and reminiscing about past events. Over the years we’ve gone on several road trips together to the States but only once have all three of us gone together. This gives me a definite advantage because we tend to jump from one incident to another in our story-telling. Such was the case last night.

I can’t remember what it was we were talking about, but all of a sudden Dave, with a straight face utters the words “that was hysterious!” Eileen and I both looked at each other, then one of us asked “hysterious?” Dave replied, “yes, it was hysterious” to which Eileen and I both collapsed laughing. Trying to compose ourselves because Dave was sitting there puzzled as to why we would be in convulsions, Eileen finally said “there’s no such word as “hysterious.” Dave was adamant that there was and I tried explaining that he either meant it was hysterical or hilarious and that if we were playing Scrabble I would challenge him on the word “hysterious.”

We were convinced that Dave had invented a new word and we said that from now on it would be used to describe something that was both hysterical and hilarious. But, alas, today, before writing this, I googled the word “hysterious” and as it turns out there’s an Urban Dictionary that contains it. And, the weird thing is we can’t even remember what it was that we were talking about that was so hysterious. Of course, that could have been as a result of the booze!

Anyways, have you ever noticed that when sitting with friends and reliving past memories that you suddenly remember more things about the event than you did the last time you talked about it? Some of it may be true but oftentimes it’s added to embellish a story – making it all the more enjoyable than it actually may have been!

that’s the way I see it

My husband loves to embellish stories, especially when he is telling a story to his mother. Most of the time it's to make her laugh. Of course, he is a born story-teller and I've always said he should write books. AND he doesn't even need a drink or two to embellish the stories…all of this is when he is stone cold sober!! lol. More fun though when you've had a drink or two.

In defense of Dave, of which I also am one, it has been my experiences with fellow Daves that we are prone to uttering what others may perceive as "Bonehead" phrases from time to time (while they actually are not as you found the existence of the word), but for the most part, as I am sure is the case with your Dave, Daves are extremely intelligent and handsome. That's the way I see it.

I love using made up words. I have a whole host of words that are mine and mine alone. Luckily, my family has learned how to understand my ramblings…

Cute post, I however loather people who make up stories, embellishing while intoxicated is cute, but I once heard a story at a party from a sober man about Kevin Bacon and a bat trapped in "their" apartment. He said the only way to get the bat out was to turn off all the lights, and the open the window, cause bats are attracted to light. I said, dumb nut, bats are blind!

The more I read it, the more it impresses me. I don’t know how I ever worked without hilarious and funny things in our life, Life would be so much easier especially when there's a jokes here and there. Being funny is nice because a lot of serious people are lacking with this kind of behavior that is why they are much look older. I would like to thank you for your outstanding blog post. Keep it up! Awesome!

Sometimes it's fun to embellish and invent events that never happened. I'm sure we all know people that have a "been there done that" attitude but try to go one better.

LOL .. that's a good one! I don't mind people who embellish a little which is different than outright lies. Sometimes it's amazing how we remember events. Many times there are things that have happened that were not so memorable because they seemed at the time to be a bad experience but it's amazing how years later we can look back and actually laugh about them.
