Everybody Does It - How About You?

Some people do it more than others; some won’t admit to doing it; others do it without even realizing it. What is it? We all gossip!
According to Wikepedia, “Gossip is idle talk or rumour, especially about the personal or private affairs of others. It forms one of the oldest and most common means of sharing (unproven) facts and views.” But, how do you distinguish between gossip and normal conversation? Often when I’m talking with a friend the conversation will begin with “What’s new?” Recently, when asked this my reply was “Linda and Peter have moved in together.” If this had been common knowledge, it would be normal conversation, but the fact that Linda had asked me not to mention it meant that I was gossiping! And, as I said in the beginning of this post, we sometimes do it without realizing it.
Again, according to Wikepedia, the word “gossip” originated when “politicians would send assistants to bars to sit and listen to general public conversations. The assistants had instructions to sip a beer and listen to opinions; they responded to the command to “go sip”, which allegedly turned into “gossip”.
Without being sexist, it’s generally believed that women gossip more than men. What do you think? And why is it that people are so interested in gossip about celebrities?
Whether we like it or not, we all do it to some degree. How about you?

I do think that women gossip more than men, but for the most part we also talk more than men. I read somewhere that in a typical day a woman uses more than twice as many words as a man, and lets face it, we like to discuss everything from what we are feeling to what we should wear. Along the way there's bound to be some gossip, although the gossiping about celebrities I don't really understand.

Men gossip in different ways than men, but I do think in general men actually care less about what is going on with other people than women. This kind of leads to less gossip.

Maybe because some think that women gossip more than men is because women do it in the open, while men do it privately. lol.

Whether it's woman or man, we all gossip. Man can gossip as much as woman. As for me, I gossip too unknowingly especially to update news between friends. However, I do not like talking bad about others and divulging secrets that others told me.

I don't hang out or talk to the girls any more so I don't hear much gossip unless it comes straight from Bill about something someone told him at work about someone we know. So I would say he gossips with the guys at work all the time and I do not so I never have any gossip to share about much of anything.

Women and men gossip equally I think, its just women are more descriptive and try to read into things, and men are just matter of fact. I gossip too, but try not too, but stuff just comes out!

I think it would depend on what you consider gossip. I mean really, men talk about sports figures a lot, who is going to win a game, why the other won't, faults of players, etc. That could be considered gossip just as much as talking about what some celebrity is wearing and why it looks awful. I think both men and women gossip plenty, it is just the form of gossip that is different.
I also think people gossip about celebrities because they are thought of as upper class, special people, and it is nice to know that even "those" people are just normal people with faults.

Men gossip just as much as women if not more. For myself, if someone tells me something negative about someone else, I seldom trust that person again with any of my personal information,as I am sure that as soon as my back is turned, I will be the next one that gossiper talks about. Good post.

Well, of course everyone gossips from time to time and not maliciously for the most part I think. Women get a bad rap mostly because they actually discuss and analyze rather than drop and go.

At my former employer (I'm on disability now) I was always blamed for the gossip. Funny thing is, now that I'm gone 2 years, they've still got issues with gossip. My friend the receptionist was the gossip queen.

Celebs because they're always in the limelight. Just don't believe everything you read in the papers.
I think gossiping is harmless provided you don't talk bad about a person or make up a story that is untrue.

People don't realize it, but gossip is really destructive, usually to the person spreading the gossip. You rarely find very successful people sitting around talking crap about people, it's usually people who are miserable and don't have anything better to do who spread gossip. I should know, I used to be one of them!
